SentenceShaper in Aphasia Therapy

Language therapy is an ongoing process

Aphasia therapy has several parts to it. When a person has a stroke or receives an injury to the brain via an accident, the more prompt the medical care, the better. Medical evaluation and care remain an ongoing part of the treatment process.

Just what has happened to the person's abilities? An evaluation of what they can and can't do is necessary before an overall aphasia therapy plan is developed. As the individual’s language improves over time, the plan will be revised as needed. Along with some form of speech therapy, the treatment plan may include medications or other kinds of medical treatment.

In the past, it was believed that language skills were regained only during a very limited a period of time in the first few months after the onset of aphasia. But more recent research has shown that this is not true; people can continue to improve their speech many years after their stroke or brain injury.

One of the best things you can do is to keep working on your speech, by talking to your family and friends and by continuing in language therapy with a speech therapist. You can do a lot on your own, most likely with a speech therapy software program.

Some of the most impressive benefits from SentenceShaper use have been observed in people who developed aphasia many years before. Aphasia therapy is typically an ongoing process, with plenty for family members and friends to do if they choose.

Computers can help

Regular language practice—daily, if possible – can make a big difference in your speech! Computers can be very helpful for this. If  you have a computer in your home, you can work on your speech as much as you like. One feature of our software SentenceShaper is that it can be used by people at many levels of difficulty.

Frequently, insurance companies will only pay for a certain number of speech therapy sessions; sometimes you need to show evidence that you are making progress before they will fund additional sessions. Therefore, if you are able to see a speech therapist, it may be helpful to work with him or her to find a way to continue working on your speech at home, both during and after treatment. Regular homework during treatment may lead to greater improvement, and this  may actually increase the amount of aphasia treatment you will be eligible for. Regular language practice after treatment ends is necessary in order to continue improving your speech and in order to maintain the improvements you have made. You may want to ask your clinician to help set you up with some appropriate computer software for this purpose.
