Computer requirements to run SentenceShaper

SentenceShaper 2 runs on Windows 2000/XP/VIsta/Windows 7. It frequently runs well on earlier versions of Windows, but we cannot guarantee that it will. It does not currently run on Macs (sorry!). The computer must have a sound card and a microphone, and enough disk space to store sound files created by the system. The program itself requires at least 200 MB for the trial version, 500 MB for the full version, and you will need a lot more disk space to store the sound files you will be creating. You will need a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768 pixels, which is pretty standard. See below for more information about this.

Obviously, there are many versions of these operating systems, and many different hardware and software environments...part of what we want to learn during the Preview Release phase is whether there are any glitches that we need to iron out. Therefore, you will definitely want to install and run the trial version before you purchase the full version, just to make sure it works fine. Please let us know (see the "Contact us" page) if you run into any problems; we will try to help.

Checking or modifying your screen resolution

If SentenceShaper doesn't fit on your screen, you may need to adjust the screen resolution. To do this, right-click on the desktop and select Properties. Under Settings, set the screen area to 1024 x 768 pixels (usually by moving a slider) and click Apply. You may want to note the original setting, in case you wish to reset your screen after using SentenceShaper. However, 1024 x 768 is a very common screen resolution, so you will probably be able to leave it at this setting.

If you have an old computer or monitor and if 1024 x 768 is not available as a choice, then you probably can't use SentenceShaper with it. Also, many new netbooks do not have an appropriate screen resolution for SentenceShaper, although the HP 2133 netbook, priced a little over $300, does.

Using a touch screen monitor

We have learned that some people find it easier to use SentenceShaper with a touch screen monitor than with a mouse. Even touch screen monitors that require you to use a stylus may be easier to use than a mouse.

If you do use a mouse, we do NOT recommend the "trackball" variety, because drag-and-drop actions can be quite difficult with this kind of mouse.

One way to get a touch screen is to buy a laptop or tablet PC with a built-in touch screen. However, note that whatever computer you use must have a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels and must run Windows 2000/XP/Vista/Windows 7. Also, some touch screens require a stylus or digitizer pen, while others will respond to the touch of your finger. SentenceShaper works with all types of touch screens, but you should find our what is easiest for the person who will be using the program.

Even if you don't have a touch screen monitor, you can still use SentenceShaper. Just be aware that some people will need to practice the mechanics of using the program (clicking on icons to play them, dragging icons on the screen, turning the sound recorder on and off, etc.) for a while before they can focus their attention on creating better speech.
